Thoughts from the Sunday scrimmage for Liberty baseball:
* Hitting won the day over pitching.
* Todd Hudson started for one side. He had a rough first inning, but settled down in the second inning. His offspeed stuff in the second inning was filthy.
* Camden Troyer hit a bomb off of Hudson into the RF bullpen. Hudson showed some fire as he walked around the mound.
* Cole Hertzler hit an absolute missile off of the LF wall. The EV was 108 mph.
*Three Hillier was playing LF but he had a brace on his throwing arm.
* Macaddin Dye and John Simmons got the starts behind the plate. It was the first time Simmons has played C in high school or college. He didn’t look overmatched at the position in his 2 or 3 innings. McMullan relieved Simmons.
* LHP Josh Swink might not light up the radar gun with his fastball, which topped out at 89 mph, but his offspeed stuff is nasty. He’s one of those pitchers who couldn’t throw a straight pitch if he wanted to. That 89 plays a whole lot faster after a 72 mph filthy curve.
* Not to be outdone by Nathan Keeter from Friday, Kane Kepley had a ridiculous sliding catch coming in with the 2B going out. They were so close together that I first thought the 2B had made the catch.
* Defense up the middle is going to be a plus this year.
